Traditional Summer Camp Program
|
|
|
|
For The Summer of 2008, Our Traditional Summer Camp Program
invites children entering the 5th, 6th, or 7th grade in the fall of 2008.
This program offers a total of six, week-long sessions of camp featuring
different exploration themes. Campers may choose either "Astronaut Training"
"Fundamentals of Flight", "Mars/Astrobiology", "LEGO Robotics or all four!
During these week-long sessions,
campers will do a variety of "hands-on"
activities and experience
simulated space missions
in our NASA-designed Mission Control and Spacecraft simulators.
Campers are
encouraged to challenge themselves, using their own skills and knowledge
of science and math to explore the concept of
space flight while working with their teammates on
simulated missions
to the Moon, to Mars, and to a Comet. Campers will also get to experience our exclusive Mystery Mission.
The traditional program will be offered during the months of July and August.
Cost: $450 per one-week session per camper. *Registration Forms received before March 1st receive a 10% discount. (You pay only $405!)
Our traditional program offers the following exploration themes:
Mars & Astrobiology:
Campers will learn about the new and quickly expanding field of astrobiology. What are the ingredients necessary for life? Can life exist on other planets and moons within our Solar system, or perhaps in other planetary systems? By concentrating on many of the recent and exciting discoveries on Mars, campers will delve into these questions and perhaps get the opportunity to help real space scientists choose areas of Mars to photograph with a camera mounted on a spacecraft currently orbiting Mars.
The Mars & Astrobiology theme is offered during the following sessions:
Session 1: Monday, July 7th through Friday, July 11th
Session 4: Monday, August 4th through Friday, August 8th
Flight & Model Rockets:
Campers will investigate the fundamental forces associated with both aerodynamic and space flight. By designing, building, and launching model aircraft and rockets, campers will learn about the many types of aeronautical propulsion systems, how to determine a rocket’s altitude and range, and how lift, thrust, gravity, and drag affect planes and spacecraft.
The Flight & Model Rockets theme is offered during the following sessions:
Session 2: Monday, July 14th through Friday, July 18th
Astronaut Training:
Campers will perform a variety of activities similar to the training exercises done by actual astronauts. By spinning in the Center’s Barany Chair and using specially designed vision-shifting glasses, campers will investigate the balance and vestibular systems of humans. Campers will investigate the processes related to freeze-dried foods and use “space-related tools” to learn about the problems and challenges associated with living and working in a micro-gravity environment.
The Astronaut Training theme is offered during the following sessions:
Session 3: Astronaut Training - Monday, July 21st through July 25th
Session 6: Astronaut Training - Monday, August 18th through Friday, August 22nd
Rockets & Robotics:
Campers, working with LEGO Mindstorms NXT, will build and program robots to meet a variety of challenging projects.
Campers will also investigate the fundamental forces associated with both aerodynamic and space flight.
By designing, building, and launching model aircraft and rockets, campers will learn about the many types of aeronautical propulsion systems, how to determine a rocket’s altitude and range, and how lift, thrust, gravity, and drag affect planes and spacecraft.
The Rockets & Robotics theme is offered during the following sessions:
Session 5: Monday, August 11th through Friday, August 15th
For all of the sessions listed above, campers will participate in one of the Center’s simulated space
mission adventures after the morning exploration theme activities.
Parents must provide transportation to and from Center.
To Register for this program, complete and mail the Camp Registration Form.
The Registration Form is also available in a PDF format and will require a FREE download of Adobe Acrobat Reader if the program
is not already installed on your computer. Camp Registration Form in PDF format.
